Toulmin statement of Vonnegut’s argument.
MP: " The writing style which is most natural for you is bound to echo the speech you hear when you were a child"
mp: James uses the writing style which is more natural to him
C: James is bound to have heard that type of speech when he was a child
Vonnegut makes the statement that "Find a subject you care about and in your heart you feel like others should care about". That statement is 100% true. If you are writing about something that you like and you feel as if other people would not only benefit from but enjoy reading, then your writing will be that much better than the ladder. People will be able to tell in your writing if you are writing the essay or novel because you have to and it doesn't mean much to you vs. if you actually care about the topic at hand and you are interested in writing about it.
“He Will Smite You”
-Joshua Arteta, Basit Ahmad, Brandon Felton
People you all do bad, always sin-ning
falling into holes, gonna be dead someday
you got guilt on your soul
let your feet slip
then God’s gonna give you a “snip”
Singin’
He will, He will smite you
He will, He will smite you
People you all know it, face it
God’s destroying power, it can be seen in everything
You know He’s got you beat
you feel the heat
That’s Hell’s flames lickin’ at your feet
He will, He will smite you
(Sing it!)
He will, He will smite you
People need to repent, relent
God’s the only mercy, gonna save you some day
you got God over you
you gotta have faith
Only by His pleasure will you be safe
He will, He will smite you
(Sing it!)
He will, He will smite you
(Everybody)
He will He will smite you
He will He will smite you
(Alright)
Cotton Mather's Diary Analysis:
Mather was obviously very educated and that is clear in the diction that he uses but what else I noticed is the way he structured this "diary" he intended for it to be read by many others. He definitely is aware of this woman's "Beauty" and we can tell that he is very tempted to do something/act about it, yet, just as he is about to act, he comes to his senses and realizes what is really wrong with this "Perfect" Woman. She is so sexually needy and throws herself at her he realizes she is tempting. Although he contradicts his thoughts by still entertaining her or associating himself with her, he knows she's bad for him. He shows signs of religious wisdom and the opposite which is very strange to me. If you know something is wrong, it should be simple not to do it, yet people in our world still do. He is virtually saying that just because something is bad doesn't mean you cannot pursue that thing if your morales are right and thats what he wanted people to know. The importance is not always what is done, but more-so why you did what you did and if you intentions were good. The morale of this excerpt is not to judge a man totally by his actions/outcomes but take time to understand his rationale/reasoning or his motivation behind what he is doing. For example the TV show "Revenge" follows the story of a Woman avenging her father's framing and accusation of being responsible for the 911 tragedy. She does so by killing, sabotaging, and tearing apart families. Our society has followed this and supported her through all of her actions no matter how evil or harsh they are because of her morales. This is the basis of what is being said, even if being with this "Perfect" woman is wrong, if his morales are not to take advantage of her it is okay.
The Crucible Act 1:
This book is set in what seems to be a typical protestant 17th century community. The people are very religious and the church is inter-twinned with the government so they influence all of the decisions made by the king or ruler. The people are very hard working and community based yet there are several disputes over who has what rights to land. It seems like the people are only friends with each other because they are part of the church and they have to. They need to associate themselves with each other just because they are in the church together. There is a lot of religious pressure to be friends with each other and so they are, however it defeats the purpose if you arent good to one and other.
